Scotland Referendum vs Caledonia

Today Scotland will decide if they become an independent country or if they continue been part of the United Kingdom. Scotland had a colony in Panama in 1698 named Caledonia. Couple of years ago I started a research project about the Scottish Colonies in Panama and how their colony failure force them to annex to the U.K.

The failure of the Darien colonisation project has been cited as one of the motivations for the 1707 Acts of Union. According to this argument, the Scottish establishment considered that their best chance of being part of a major power would be to share the benefits of England’s international trade and the growth of the English Empire, so its future would have to lie in unity with England. Furthermore, Scotland’s nobles were almost bankrupted by the Darien fiasco.
